A Vowel Sing-Along

If you're looking for a great book to use to identify or simply review vowels, Jim Tobin's book, Sue MacDonald Had a Book is a great read! Be sure to practice your "Old MacDonald beforehand ;). In this book Sue MacDonald searches various locations to find A, E, I, O and U after they have jumped off the pages of the book she is reading. I used this book in a Skype read aloud session with a student in our class that is homebound due to Spinal Muscular Atrophy. After reading the book I had the students raise their hands if they had the vowel that I mentioned in their name. This was a great activity that allowed all of the students to participate.

"No Dragons for Tea"

This week in Kindergarten we are talking about Fire Safety. While doing a Book Search through one of the tools Google offers I came across the book No Dragons for Tea by Jean Pendziwol and Martine Gourbault. This book is about a little girl that becomes friends with a dragon and invites him over for snacks and tea. During the dragons visit he sneezes and fire shoots out of his nose catching the house on fire. The book does a great job at going through the steps of what you should do in the event your house catches on fire. At the end of the book there are discussion questions and a fire safety rhyme. I highly recommend reading this book to any primary classroom during fire safety week or just as a friendly review of how to stay safe if there is a fire.

My Blog

Hello! Welcome to my very first blog. I'm creating this for an online class that I'm taking. This blog will have two purposes:

1. To post the tiles and brief summaries/uses of children's books that I am using (and have used) in my classroom.

2. Occasionally post my responses to the Google online class that I'm taking that I think others would be interested in learning about.

Happy Reading!
Dayna :)
